Eloy Cepero

Eloy Cepero is the host of "Grandes Leyendas Musicales” which airs on Gen TV Channel 8. Eloy was born in Bahia Honda, Cuba, in 1945 and lives in Miami Florida since his departure from Cuba in 1962 through “Operation Pedro Pan”.   He attended Coral Gables Senior High School and the University of Miami where he majored in economics and Latin American history.  He went on to study finance in his post graduate studies at Florida International University.   From 1969 to 1971 he served in the US Navy as Assistant to the Commanding Officer with Confidential and Secret Clearance. 

Eloy Cepero is an avid music collector, historian, and TV and radio show host.  His top rated “Grandes Leyendas Musicales” (Great Musical Legends) has aired nerly 200 shows on three different local tv stations.  For the past 5 years, he has been hosting a radio show by the same name on WWFE, La Poderosa, Saturdays from 12 to 1 PM which, to date, has aired over 250 radio shows. 

Since 2008, at the University of Miami Institute of Cuban and Cuban American Studies (ICCAS), Eloy heads a living history project, also  named “Grandes Leyendas Musicales”, where once a month he interviews important figures of Cuban music before a live audience, about their lives, experiences and contribution to music.   These interviews are preserved both at ICCAS and the Cuban Heritage Collection of the University of Miami for future use by anyone wanting to research the music, musicians and times.

His first published book, “Cuba 1902 – 1962, a Journey Through Postcards” was a best seller and was followed by “Cuba 1898 – 1915, a Journey Through Postcards”.  His latest book “Tales of a Cuban Family from Bahia Honda to Iceland, Memoires of a Pedro Pan,” has been well received and he recently collaborated with 30 other Cuban exiled writers, on “Cuba, an Epic Journey” depicting the rise of the Castro regime and the last 50 years of the Cuban exile in the U.S.

Since his graduation in 1971, he has devoted himself to the study of the history of Cuba, it’s culture, history and music.  He has given lectures and conferences on the history of Cuban music and has collaborated on ten documentaries of the same.  Eloy’s music collection is considered one of the largest private Cuban music collections in the U.S. and consists of LP’s, CD’s, videocassettes and DVD’s and books. 

During earlier years, Eloy was co-founder and Executive Vice President of Peninsula Mortgage Bankers Corporation, established in 1981 and for over 25 years, one of the largest Hispanic owned mortgage banking companies in the US.  During his extended banking career, he has filled many executive positions in financial institutions such as Southeast Bank, Sunbank, Bank Boston Mortgage Company and others.  In 1982, he was the first president and co-founder of Metropolitan Federal Savings and Loan Association in Hialeah, Florida.

Since his youth, Eloy has participated and collaborated with many civic and cultural organizations in his community.  He is Past President and “President for Life” of the Latin Builders Association, President Emeritus of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  He is Trustee of the Cuban American National Foundation, past director of Interamerican Businessmen’s Association and Alfalit International, a non-profit organization based in Miami which devotes itself to promoting literacy in Latin America and Africa.  Eloy was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of WLRN, Channel 17.

Mr. Cepero is the recipient of the “Leslie Pantin Community Award” from the Interamerican Businessmen’s Association; the Latin Builders’ Association “Lifetime Achievement Award” for over 30 years of service; and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  He was also named to the Coral Gables Senior High School “Hall of Fame” and the “Cuban American Sports Hall of Fame” for track and field.  He was recently honored by the Alliance for Aging with the “President’s Distinguished Service Award for Excellence”.
